Shared Lives Carer (Self-Employed) – A Different Way to Work in Care

This Shared Lives Week (w/c 15 June), we’re shining a spotlight on a unique and life-changing opportunity.

Shared Lives Carers open their homes and their lives to support someone who needs help to live independently and be part of their community. It’s not just care — it’s about sharing everyday life, building relationships, and making a real difference.

What is a Shared Lives Carer?

A Shared Lives Carer is a self-employed individual who supports a person (or people) in their own home. This could be a long‑term arrangement, offering short breaks, or Shared Days.

Shared Lives Carers are self‑employed people who take on an extraordinary role in their own home, supporting a person with eligible needs and enabling them to live a full, meaningful and independent life as part of the local community. 

As a Shared Lives Carer, you will be rewarded with good rates of pay, full training and support, and the satisfaction of making a huge difference to someone’s life.

Important Information

This is not an employed role with Herefordshire Council. Shared Lives Carers are self-employed and are approved to provide care and support in their own home.

What You’ll Receive

·       Up to £650 per person per week (2026–27 rates)

·       Self-employed status with eligibility for HMRC tax relief

·       Full training and ongoing professional support

·       The opportunity to work flexibly from your own home
